Plant Invaders of the Southern Cape

A List of Alien Species

The plants listed here have all been introduced into southern Africa, either intentionally or not, and have become naturalised to the extend where they can spread without the aid of human intervention. They have established themselves in the southern Cape region and are threatening both natural ecosystems and agricultural productivity. By being included in this list does not automatically brand a plant as undesirable and to be eradicated in all situations, because many of the species are grown commercially or are cultivated in parks and gardens. It is only when a plant “escapes” and grows in places considered undesirable, like conservation areas and along watercourses, that it should be removed.
