The Overland Stage abounds with quirky characters who all play a role in the ultimate conclusion of this very well-structured Western.

John Royal gets to be Hekla’s new sheriff with the young cowhand Sam Dexter as his deputy. Together they stand up against the thugs who take over the claims of the gold miners on Ford Mountain and solve the mystery surrounding Mayor Trelawney. Much of the book is given to blow by blow accounts of fistfights in which poor Sam usually comes off second best. All in all a good Western with a nice if not original twist.
