Just a small seaside resort, but it is the only town in South Africa to have two official names - Arniston and Waenhuiskrans. And then there is Kassiesbaai, a 200 year-old restored fishing village which is a declared national monument, within its perimeter.
The name Waenhuiskrans was given by the annual holidaymakers to whom the town owes its existence because of a huge sea cave at the site, “waenhuis” being a barn and “krans” a cliff. The Arniston was a ship which wrecked close by in 1815 with a loss of 273 lives.
The town is mainly a holiday resort and tourist attraction, with good catches of fish to be had from either boat or rocks.
